City of devils

Operetta Radau with glanz&krawall, Franz von Suppé and Mikhail Bulgakov

The devil is looking for reinforcements.

Suppé's operetta and Bulgakov's social satire collide in STADT DER TEUFEL. The collective glanz&krawall Satan sends Voland, Margarita and a host of diabolical figures through Ballroom, city festival and theatre space. Between revolt in hell and hedonism and careerism on On earth, the balance of power begins to totter. Also the cultural sector gets its share of grease. At the bigshowdown in the theatre, the dismantling begins male geniuses.

glanz&krawall bring a Berlin snout into the Viennese operetta: "Are you motherf**ers ready for the old shit?"

Suppè meets Bulgakov
glanz&krawall are reworking the operetta genre for the first time and returning to its core idea: to create a raucous and cheerful atmosphere in entertainment centres. To this end, they mix Franz von Suppé's operetta Der Teufel auf Erden (The Devil on Earth, Vienna, 1878) with passages from Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita (Moscow, 1939) to create a diabolical contemporary cocktail. What temptations are we exposed to here in the diabolical primordial soup of patriarchy and capitalism? And how can we free ourselves from this situation?

glanz&krawall are a Berlin (music) theatre group led by director Marielle Sterra and dramaturge Dennis Depta. In their interdisciplinary musical theatre, they have been blithely seeking confrontation with the rest of society since 2014 - from the high culture of opera to the poetic forlornness of a solo entertainer in a village disco. Sterra and Depta bring formats such as wrestling, circus, punk concerts or harness racing into theatre spaces (e.g. Heimathafen Neukölln, Theaterdiscounter, Tischlerei der Deutschen Oper Berlin) and bring their theatre into urban spaces, e.g. into clubs, lidos or psychiatric wards. Their productions have been invited to festivals such as the Musiktheatertage Wien, the Kleist-Festtage Frankfurt (Oder) and the Phoenix Festival Erfurt. glanz&krawall work across generations with professionals and amateurs. Their play texts are created during the rehearsal process together with the performers. Since 2019, they have initiated the inclusive theatre and music festival series BERLIN is not... in Berlin, for which music acts and performing arts groups alike tackle operas by Richy Wagner & Co. for a broad audience. In July 2025, the fifth edition of BERLIN is not SALZBURG will take place on the site of the former Stasi headquarters in Berlin-Lichtenberg.

In 2022, glanz&krawall founded the DEUTSCHE BIERTRINKERINNEN UNION party at the Volkstheater Rostock. In 2023/2024, they worked in the musical and operetta genres for the first time with CATS OF BERLIN (Revier Südost, Berlin) and STADT DER TEUFEL (Heimathafen Neukölln). In December 2024, their bureaucracy musical DIE TÜTEN AUS DER VERWALTUNG premiered with the Thikwa Theatre in Berlin.
