That was the Musiktheatertage 2025! A festival review

The Vienna Music Theatre Festival is already over. From the 17 to 27 September 2025 the latest works of music theatre were presented at 8 different venues such as the Theater Odeon or the Theater am Werk, but also in unusual locations such as the Gedenkwald or the Zacherlfabrik. This year's focus was on the shifts and social ruptures in our social and cultural norms.

An extraordinarily diverse programme could be experienced: In the international guest performances, the handling of deafness on the music theatre stage was questioned (THE RISE), social satire was combined with operetta (STADT DER TEUFEL) and new music was broken down into its individual parts (BEING KARL DIETER). One of the festival's world premières (PULVER) also aims to break things down into their individual parts. In addition to questions of identity and personality (SPLICE), other world premieres dealt with consent and power in sexual relationships (VENUS IM PELZ), memories and making them audible (DICHTES HOLZ) as well as a humorous approach to the tragedy in the lives of famous personalities such as the once great showmaster Liberace (LET ME PLAY THE LION TOO). Workshops and lectures from the HÖRBLICKE education series, the AUSTRIAN MUSIC THEATRE DAY music theatre conference and the late-night club MOSAIK also contributed to the wide range of events on offer at this year's festival.

A big thank you to all the artists, partners, venues, our funding bodies and the fantastic audience! ❤️
