Synkope – KOLLAPSOLOGIE 4

Interactive performance for the audience

In SYNKOPE, the concluding fourth part of KOLLAPSOLOGIE on collapsing systems, the audience now acts as both protagonists and performers. Seated opposite one another as strangers around „campfires“ in Euripides’ cave, they engage in dialogue. What can be said about society in this context will be reflected acoustically throughout the performance.

This collective composition, which blends play and art, spoken word and conference, offers those present the opportunity to reflect on the phenomenon of society alongside strangers, whilst escaping the feeling of powerlessness – the German word for „syncope“ – that comes from not being heard.

Kollapsologie IV: SYNKOPE weaves together all the audience’s discussions into a polyphonic composition, interspersed with pauses that make audible what would otherwise have been lost.

The world system as we know it today is based on the thinking of ancient Greece. As in Parts I–III, reference is made to this in a text by Thomas Ballhausen on the character of Alcestis, this time drawing on Euripides.

This final part of the KOLLAPSOLOGIE tetralogy, which deals with the fourth element, „Earth“, refers to our living environment. Encountering a stranger (another human being) is the most challenging task of our existence. The ability to engage in personal conversation will shape our future.

THOMAS CORNELIUS DESI is an Austrian composer, author and director as well as co-founder and artistic director of the MUSIKTHEATERTAGE WIEN. In numerous productions, Desi has developed a new music theatre as a "théâtre d'auteur". At the centre of this work is the individual and the consequences of their actions. From this, Desi developed the format of a "theatre of encounter". Inspired by the work of Jakob L. Moreno, the interaction of the audience through poetics and aesthetics enables those present to relate individually to each other and to the theme of the piece.

Desi was musical director of "Totales Theater Wien", ensemble KlangArten and artistic director of the music theatre group ZOON. His book "The New Music Theatre", co-authored with Eric Salzman, has become a standard work on new music theatre.
