GAIA 24. OPERA del MONDO
Austrian premiere (opening)
GAIA 24. OPERA del MONDO
Opera Aperta: Roman Grygoriv, Illia Razumeiko (UKR)
A "geo-historical" opera about war and its ecological traces
Following the internationally acclaimed work CHORNOBYLDORF (2022), the Ukrainian company Opera Aperta is staging GAIA 24, a multimedia opera dystopia about the rebellion of nature against the destructive power of mankind.
6 June 2023 - the demolition of the Ukrainian Kakhovka dam by the Russian army is considered one of the biggest war and environmental crimes in recent history. 18 billion cubic metres of water flowed into the Black Sea, entire landscapes ceased to exist, but at the same time parts of the Dnipro region are gradually regenerating and creating new, constantly changing ecosystems.
The philosopher and anthropologist Bruno Latour compared the Russian-Ukrainian war with humanity's ongoing war against nature and our planet. Now that mankind has abruptly failed, is the slow victory of Gaia, Mother Earth, becoming apparent?
As a cross-genre and cross-linguistic "Opera del Mondo", the company Opera Aperta stages the motifs of destruction and reconstruction in the mirror of current and historical ecological catastrophes. Between video projections with images of destroyed landscapes and live musical productions, Gaia's voice rises - can we still hear what she has to tell us?
"When the earth yields a rich harvest, be prepared for a great war. When the seas dry up, the rivers change their course and the forests become uninhabitable due to radiation - then the empire will soon perish. When the end of the world comes, the earth and the sky will merge into one endless line. Thus speaks Gaia, Terra, Maga, Mother Gaia to us."
